Defense Rests in Capital Murder Retrial of Texas Surgeon

The defense has rested in the capital murder retrial of a West Texas plastic surgeon accused in the 2012 slaying of a pathologist who was dating his ex-girlfriend.

Closing arguments are expected later Tuesday in the trial of Dr. Thomas Michael Dixon of Amarillo.

Dixon testified last week that he had nothing to do with the July 2012 stabbing and shooting death of Dr. Joseph Sonnier III at the victim's home in Lubbock.

Dixon's business partner, David Neal Shepard, accepted a plea deal in 2013 and was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the killing.

Jurors in Dixon's first capital murder trial were unable to agree on a verdict.
