Massive Arson Fire Burns Housing Complex

One firefighter suffers 2nd-degree burns

One firefighter was injured after a five-alarm arson fire burned six buildings Monday at a vacant housing complex in southeast Dallas, Dallas Fire-Rescue officials said.

Each building contained several housing units that burned at Bexar and Bethurum after the fire started at about 11:23 a.m., officials said.

Chopper 5 video showed heavy smoke darkening the air as the blaze quickly escalated to five-alarms.

More than 140 firefighters battled the fire, which was extinguished at about 1:30 p.m.

The unnamed firefighter received second-degree burns to his upper body and was transported to Parkland Hospital.

The complex has been vacant for some time, and each of the units' doors and windows were boarded up. Fire investigators said a number of the units had apparently been entered and used as shelter.

Investigators said because of the nature of the fires, they have labeled it as arson.

"We have individuals that are walking around and making sure there are no other suspects that are on the property," said Jason Evan, a Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman.

No one has been arrested, but investigators said they have interviewed a number of people as they look for clues to determine exactly what happened.

One investigator said the arsonist was setting new fires as firefighters were putting out the flames.

Four buildings were gutted, and two others were slightly damaged.
