Garland police are investigating the death of a 3-years-old boy who was shot in the head Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. inside a home in the 4700 block of Maritime Cove near Lake Ray Hubbard, Garland police spokesman Officer Joe Harn said.
Paramedics rushed the child to Children's Medical Center of Dallas shortly after the incident was reported, police said.
Garland police said on Thursday that detectives believe the incident was an accidental shooting with a handgun, but that an investigation by detectives and forensics units is continuing.
"As we find out more exact circumstances, we'll determine whether it's just strictly accidental or if there's any charges to be brought," Harn said. "And right now in this investigation, we're just not sure yet. We're trying to find out exactly what happened."
The boy's parents and at least three other young children were in the home at the time of the shooting, police said.
Investigators have not said who fired the fatal round.
