A woman and a co-worker went inside the Fox Fuel gas station on the 10100 Harry Hines Boulevard to buy food at about 1:30 a.m. The gas station clerk said the woman left her car running with her grandchildren — 7-year-old twins — asleep in the back.

The clerk said someone drove away in the woman's car while the children were inside. The woman's co-worker, who was asleep in another vehicle, awoke and began following the stolen vehicle.

Dallas police said the person who stole the woman's car noticed the co-worker following and slammed on the brakes, causing a crash on Interstate 30 near Hampton Road. The thief then rammed the co-worker's vehicle until the stolen vehicle rolled over.

Police said the thief then ran from the vehicle and has not yet been located.

The two children in the vehicle were transported to Children's Medical Center of Dallas, according to police. Both were in car seats during the incident and were in good condition and released.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Authorities initially reported that two people were in custody for the theft of the vehicle. Police have since amended the report.
