1,564 Random Gunfire Calls To Dallas Police

A woman was slightly injured by a stray bullet that fell from the sky in downtown Dallas early New Year's morning and grazed her left shoulder, police said Friday.

"It was like a bruise, she had a big puffy spot from it hitting her and a bullet was laying in the seat," the woman's friend said.

It was the only injury reported from the 1,564 calls of random gunfire Dallas police received from 11 p.m. Wednesday to 2 a.m. Thursday, Dallas Police Sgt. Gil Cerda said. Last year there were 1,107 calls in Dallas, he said.

Stray bullets damaged the windshield of a Dallas police officer's personal vehicle parked at a police substation while he was on duty, Cerda said.

In Fort Worth, police reported 257 random gunfire calls about the same time, but no injuries were reported.
