Dallas police said 26-year-old Lavander Leon Hammon Jr. stopped his Ford Ranger pickup to help the woman change a flat tire on the shoulder of northbound Loop 12, just north of Interstate 30, at about 10:05 p.m.

Police said Hammon had finished changing the tire and was loading equipment when he was struck by a Chrysler 200 and crushed between his truck and the sedan, which caught fire.

Hammon was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The driver of the Chrysler — a 45-year-old woman — was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas and later charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Traffic was diverted to the service road and I-30 while police investigated.
