Amazon Skips Dallas, Sends HQ2 to New York, Virginia

“Make no mistake, this has been a ‘win’ for our region regardless of the outcome": Dallas Regional Chamber President said

What to Know

  • Retail giant Amazon has selected New York City and Northern Virginia to share its new headquarters.
  • In January of this year, a pool of 238 bids was narrowed to a list of 20 finalists.
  • Amazon announced a smaller, third investment in Nashville.

Dallas is officially out of the mix for Amazon's prized HQ2.

Tuesday morning, Amazon officially selected New York City and Northern Virginia for two new headquarters, and Nashville to host an operations center, ending a year-long courtship by cities and metropolitan areas across North America.

"These two locations will allow us to attract world-class talent that will help us to continue inventing for customers for years to come," said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. "The team did a great job selecting these sites, and we look forward to becoming an even bigger part of these communities."[[290815791,R]]

A Wall Street Journal report Monday night suggested additional cities may receive "major sites," hinting the possibility of Dallas, believed to be in the top three contenders, being included in the announcement. Amazon later confirmed Nashville would host its new Operations Center of Excellence.

“Make no mistake, this has been a ‘win’ for our region regardless of the outcome," said Dale Petroskey, CEO and President of the Dallas Regional Chamber, which led the collective bid by North Texas cities. "Our business community grows and expands by the day, and our momentum as a destination of choice has only increased as a result of being a finalist for HQ2,” Petroskey said.

“We like to win, and we’re used to winning, so while we are disappointed, we understand Amazon’s decision is one they believe is best for their company at this time,” said Mike Rosa, senior vice president of economic development at the Dallas Regional Chamber.

An Amazon news release posted online made no mention of Dallas or other Texas cities in the running for HQ2.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings talks about the recent reports of where Amazon may end up locating HQ2.

The company received 238 proposals before narrowing the list to 20 in January. The North Texas pitch included at least 35 local sites identified as having building potential that matched Amazon's wishes.
