‘This Is What They Deserve': Veterans, Some Homeless, Laid to Rest at DFW National Cemetery

Twenty veterans, many with no remaining family or loved ones, were laid to rest with honors Wednesday at a small funeral service at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. They served in the Army, Marines, Air Force and Navy. Some were homeless, some died in nursing homes, and many simply lost contact with their extended families. About 100 people -- mostly strangers -- came to honor them.People who knew four of the veterans accepted flags as tokens of the military's gratitude for their service. Thirteen of the veterans had no known next of kin, and volunteers accepted the flags on their behalf and on behalf of families who couldn't attend the service.  Continue reading...
