SMU Alumni Effort to Save Student Newspaper's Independent Company Quashed

The alumni fight to save the independence of Southern Methodist University’s student newspaper is over. The board that oversees the publication said Tuesday that fundraising efforts came too late to keep the paper's parent company from dissolving.The Daily Campus announced earlier this month that its independent parent company, Student Media Company, voted in January to dissolve at the end of the school year because of lack of funds. The paper would stop printing and would live online under the journalism department.Daily Campus alumni launched a last-minute fundraising effort, hoping to raise $125,000 by the end of the month to cover operating costs for the next year so the newspaper could remain independent of the journalism school.  Continue reading...
