Reports: Drowned Salvadoran Father and Daughter Were Heading to Dallas

Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez and Angie Valeria Martinez Avalos, the father and daughter whose dead bodies were photographed along the shores of the Rio Grande on Monday after they drowned, were heading to Dallas.Family members living in Dallas had guaranteed Martinez that they would find work here, according to Rosa Maria Ramirez, Martinez’s mother, the BBC reports. “I told him to stop chasing the American Dream and that it wasn’t safe to cross the border through the river,” Ramirez recalled telling her son. The family set out for the U.S. in early April and had been in Mexico for about two months. They were unable to request asylum due to the Trump administration’s metering efforts that are keeping migrants in Mexico before they are summoned by U.S. officials to formally request asylum.They had been issued humanitarian visas by the Mexican government.   Continue reading...
