Mexican Immigrant Says He's Super-happy to Win Jail Release, Escape Deportation

President Donald Trump told the nation last week that he would handle the immigration status of children who were brought to the U.S. illegally “with heart,” but an attorney is demanding to know why ICE officials had one such “dreamer” detained overnight Tuesday.Edwin Santiago Romero, 26, was picked up by Richardson police late Tuesday on an outstanding traffic warrant for an expired registration and not carrying proof of insurance. The friends of Romero paid $1,050 to clear the warrants about 3 a.m. Romero, originally from Mexico, was released Wednesday afternoon from the Richardson jail. But Romero was held overnight under a detainer issued by Immigration and Custom Enforcement, or ICE.“He is the best of our country,” said Michelle Pareja, an attorney with the Dallas legal nonprofit that represents Romero, the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services.Pareja said the Romero case illustrates why collaboration with ICE should end.  Continue reading...
