Mary “Junie” Smith, 73, ex-Farmers Branch Council Member Survived 1967 Plane Crash

On Nov. 20, 1967, Mary Miller Murphy "Junie" Smith was one of 12 survivors of TWA Flight 128 that crashed on approach to Greater Cincinnati Airport.Her husband was among the 70 killed by the crash. Six months pregnant at the time, Junie Smith had a miscarriage four weeks later. She devoted much of her remaining life to civic service in Farmers Branch. A former City Council member there, she was a plaintiff in the lawsuit that knocked down a proposed city ordinance seeking to block people in the U.S. unlawfully from renting. In 2014, the U.S. Supreme let stand a lower-court ruling that deemed the ordinance unconstitutional.Smith, 73, died Friday in her sleep at William Clements Jr. University Hospital in Dallas.Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane in Farmers Branch.
