Former Mexican Cop Indicted on Federal Drug Charges After Texas Traffic Stop Turned Up Fentanyl

A former Mexican police officer who nearly crashed into a Texas state trooper now faces federal drug-trafficking charges. Assmir Contreras-Martinez, 30, of Tucson, Ariz., was indicted Thursday on one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl.A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper stopped a 2007 Ford Explorer on May 11 after the SUV nearly rear-ended him on Interstate 40 west of Amarillo. He soon became suspicious of the driver, identified as Contreras-Martinez, according to a criminal complaint.After Contreras-Martinez agreed to a search of the vehicle, the trooper discovered 33 bundles containing a total of about 72 pounds of what he suspected was cocaine, the complaint says.  Continue reading...
