Fiesta Mart Deal Creates Among the Largest Hispanic-focused U.S. Grocers

Texas' largest Hispanic grocer, Fiesta Mart, is being acquired by the company that runs El Super stores in California and other states to form a company with $3 billion in annual sales.Bodega Latina Corp., a U.S. subsidiary of Mexico-based Grupo Comercial Chedraui is buying Houston-based Fiesta Mart from ACON Investments.Fiesta operates 63 stores in Dallas and Houston. El Super is a 59-store chain with stores in California, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. The two companies said together they will be "one of the largest Hispanic-focused supermarket companies in the U.S." More than 50% of the fast growing U.S. Hispanic population resides within the five states in which the new company operates, the companies said. Fiesta Mart has struggled in the North Texas market as competition accelerated from new Hispanic-focused grocers opening stores and from traditional grocers doing a better job of catering to neighborhoods.   Continue reading...
