29-year-old Man Arrested in Assault on Transgender Woman in East Oak Cliff

Dallas police have arrested a man who is accused of attacking a transgender woman Friday in east Oak Cliff.Edward Thomas, 29, was arrested about 9:30 p.m. Sunday in connection with "his role in the aggravated assault" that was recorded on video, police said. The victim had been driving between 5 and 6 p.m. Friday at the Royal Crest Apartments in the 3500 block of Wilhurt Avenue when she was involved in a minor traffic accident. A man began to beat her during an argument about the accident and several other people joined in, police said. Video of the incident, which was posted on social media, shows a man punching the woman while other people start to kick her.A group of women carried the victim from the fight at the end of the video. Witnesses took her to UT Southwestern Medical Center, where she spoke to officers and said homophobic slurs were used during the assault, which is being "flagged" as a hate crime, police said.
