For all the hope bolstered by the addition of Greg Hardy, the return of Sean Lee and the drafting of Byron Jones, there remains fear in the Cowboys’ defense.

Despite the improvement last season and the promise of being even better in 2015, this isn’t a deep unit. For a reminder, look out on the field in minicamp today at AT&T Stadium and see this:

    Starting at safety, Jeff Heath.

Starter J.J. Wilcox is nursing a foot injury, one that will keep him out of the remainder of practices this week. The Cowboys are crossing their fingers that their rising young playmaker is healthy for next month’s training camp.

This isn’t a criticism of Heath. He’s a try-hard guy who maximizes his limited potential and physical skills. In Wilcox’s absence, there’s also a chance to shine for free agent Corey White. Unlike Heath, the former Saints’ draft pick has the strength and athleticism to make plays in the running game and also cover quicker slot receivers.

Wilcox is still the solid starter alongside Barry Church. It would just be nice to see an upgrade on the depth chart beneath him.

A native Texan who was born in Duncanville and graduated from UT-Arlington, Richie Whitt has been a mainstay in the Metroplex media since 1986. He’s held prominent roles on all media platforms including newspaper (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Observer), radio (105.3 The Fan) and TV (co-host on TXA 21 and numerous guest appearances, including NBC 5). He lives in McKinney with his wife, Sybil, and two very spoiled dogs.
