NFC East Watch: How Jay-Z's Playing a Role in Victor Cruz's Talks With the Giants

Cruz is currently a restricted free agent

In NFC East news not directly involving your Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants’ receiver Victor Cruz--currently a restricted free agent--is still without a contract. But he reportedly wants to stay with the Giants. That’s not surprising. What is kind of surprising is that part of the reason Cruz wants to stay put is because of rapper Jay-Z.

Cruz reportedly wants to be a Giant long-term, partly because he is excited about the opportunities he’ll see alongside Jay’s marketing company, Roc Nation.

"[Cruz] told his agents not to sign him with another team because he wants to work with Jay-Z," a source told Jason Caole of Yahoo! Sports. "There might have been a couple of teams interested, but he didn't want to go anywhere."

The Cruz-Jay-Z connection goes a little further. Cruz recently signed with the Creative Artists Agency, reportedly at the advice of H to the Izzo (as the kids call him).

But this isn’t to say that Cruz playing elsewhere in 2013 ever seemed likely. He was already given the first round tender by the Giants, and while he’s clearly talented, he’d now come at such a high price that a lot of teams would likely take pause before even considering moving pieces to land him.
