Michael Irvin: “I Think Dez is Starting to Live Up to the Hype”

Dez Bryant had career highs in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns in 2012

As a Pro Football Hall of Famer, NFL Network analyst, friend and mentor to Dez Bryant and one of the vaunted triumvirate of Dallas Cowboys receivers to wear No. 88, it’s only natural that Irvin has spent a good portion of Super Bowl week fielding questions about the current No. 88.

Bryant is coming off a Pro Bowl-caliber season (he didn’t make it of course, but he probably should have), in which he recorded 92 catches, 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns, numbers that now account for just under half of his career production. Irvin believes this breakout season--knock on wood--could signal the beginning of a new phase of Bryant’s career--”could” being the operative word, here.

I think Dez is starting to live up to the hype,” Irvin told NFL.com, via the Dallas Morning News. “It’s still a long journey. … Is he there? Is he over the hump? No. But is it time that we can have a small celebration and tell him to get back on the track? Absolutely. He’s had a couple first downs, he’s doing well. But he still has a long road. He has to stay on that path.”
