ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr's First Mock Draft: Dallas Selects UNC G Jonathan Cooper

The Cowboys will select 18th overall in this April's NFL Draft

It’s that time again. Time for incredibly premature mock drafts!

A lot can change from now until April of course, but hey, it’s not like the Cowboys are playing football or anything. Aside from that, this particular mock draft comes from the best in the biz, as they say, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.

In the first of many to come, Kiper Jr. has your Dallas Cowboys shoring up their offensive line via University of North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper with the 18th overall pick.

“The Cowboys need to address one of their lines in the first round, and the top guards this year are exceptionally highly rated,” Kiper writes, per ESPN Dallas. “So while a tackle might be preferable, there would be nothing wrong with strengthening an area of significant weakness. Of course, you know the Cowboys will trade up for some big-game guy and reduce their inventory of picks again, but assuming common sense prevails this time, a lineman at 18 works fine.”

Of course, this would be the second time in three years that Dallas addressed the offensive line in the first round. Left tackle Tyron Smith, who quickly became the Cowboys best lineman after coming to town, was taken in the first round back in 2011.
