Ball, Hamlin Draw Jerry's Praise

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones likes what he sees from his defense, which isn’t all that surprising considering that it was the best defense, in terms of scoring, in the NFC last season.

What is vaguely surprising is who among the defense Jerry singled out when speaking with us recently. Not the juggernaut tandem of outside linebackers; not the rocksteady tandem of inside linebackers; not the pair of Pro Bowl cornerbacks.

As part of a larger soliloquy on the defense, Jones singled out the work of safeties Mike Hamlin and Alan Ball--the latter of whom will  enter the season as a starter for the first time.

“They've really had a real good, positive go of it, because we've been working in the end zone a lot and, of course, without the running game I’m talking about, you really know where you are with pads on and tackling its a little disadvantage to the offense but overall I’m really pleased with the defense and the depth,” Jones said. “We've got some serious depth over on the defensive side of the ball.

“We really like what Ball is doing, he's really stepping up. Hamlin's doing some good things out there so, uh, the safeties are looking good. I know we talk about Free, talk about Barron, but we've got some safeties playing good too.”
