7/18: D-OMG, Happy Birthday, Sweat Emotion, Oh My!

The best local bands, rocking legends, and the helmsman of the Enterprise are what you'll be seeing this weekend.

D-OMG: As the Dallas Observer Music Awards turn 21, six venues on Lower Greenville will be transformed into showcases for a huge portion of the best local music in the Metroplex. Check out the full schedule here to see where and when each band will play, but know this -- the whole day, all the shows, everything but the beer and possible parking tickets will cost you $5. Holy moly.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. ROGERS: Competing with that juggernaut, Ben Rogers of the Metrognome collective, is hosting a benefit for the group in celebration of his birthday. The show is also the penultimate shindig at the Chat Room Pub, but with bands like Fight Bite and Eat Avery's Bones on the bill, the collective could collect enough cash to build a 300-capcity non-profit venue. Chat Room Pub at 8 p.m. $5.

SWEAT EMOTION: No, it's not a typo -- you know the heat on Sunday is certain to turn the Aerosmith/ZZ Top concert at Superpages.com Center into a steamy group of middle aged folks screaming "Dream On" at the top of their lungs. That aside, it should be a neat experience to hear all of "Toys in the Attic" live. Also, ZZ Top is freaking awesome -- that's something Brett Johnson taught us well. 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

OH MY!: George Takei will be the featured lecturer at the Crow Collection of Asian Art, but the discussion isn't likely to mention much about The Shat'. Takei will be talking about his life as a Japanese-American both in and out of Hollywood, including the time he spent in a Japanese internment camp after the attack on Pearl Harbor. 6 p.m. Sunday. $15 for members, $30 for non-members. Reservations required. 214-979-6438.
