DeSoto has decided to cancel the fireworks display at its citywide party because of dry conditions.

"It's tinderbox dry," said Michael Laws, DeSoto's Fire Marshal.

Laws said the fireworks display is near a wooded area. If a spark were to land in the woods, it could cause trouble that firefighters wouldn't be able to get to fast because of all the trees, he said.

Lighting fireworks inside the city limits will be illegal this Fourth of July because of burn bans, fire officials suggest leaving the fireworks to the professionals.

"As dry as it is and as heavily wooded as it is, it would only take one to get over in there and cause a fire," Laws said.

The city still plans to have the party at the Town Center.
