Mom Served Subpoena Over Daughter's Overdue Library Books

A North Texas woman is outraged about being summoned to court because her daughter's library books were overdue.

Jennifer Farmer and her daughter live in Whitesboro, Grayson County.

Farmer said she was shocked to receive a subpoena because her daughter's library books were four weeks past due.

The fine for the books totaled $15.

Farmer said the library never contacted her about the books and that her daughter doesn't want to go to that library anymore.

"No 11-year-old should ever have to sit back and worry, 'Is my mama going to have to go to jail if I lose this book,'" Farmer said. "You know, that's not a lesson to be taught to a child."

Farmer paid the fine and turned over the books at the municipal court.

NBC 5 has reached out to the library for comment but has not heard back yet.
