Google Says Desktops Will Soon Be Irrelevant

The future of computing won't involve a desktop, at least according to Google.

European Director of Google’s online sales John Herlihy said at a recent conference that his company is preparing for a mobile life after computers.

“In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant," he said. "In Japan, most research is done today on smart phones, not PCs.”

The move might suit Google just fine as a switch to mobile devices would mean more reliance on cloud storage and computing.

Google has already shown how much the world relies on its products like Gmail. Last fall when the email service went down, Twitter dealt with the repercussions as angry Google users flooded the San Francisco-based social networking site to complain about their down email.

Since the Gmail crash, Google has gone on the offensive to prove their apps are reliable. And just in case, the tech giant is also entering the tablet world, which is good news if Apple's lawsuit against HTC (and indirectly against Google's Android) has any merit.
