Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz apologized to baseball fans, his teammates and manager for being a "distraction" and admitted being "careless" in buying supplements and vitamins, which he said led to his name being put on a Federal list of dopers.

But Big Papi told reporters Saturday that he never bought or used steroids.

“I never thought that buying supplements and vitamins, it was going to hurt anybody’s feelings,” Ortiz said in a news conference scheduled three hours before a game against the New York Yankees. “I want to apologize to the fans for the distraction. This past week has been a nightmare to me. I’m the kind of guy I think about the fans every day. I don’t think the game would be as good as it is without the fans. I try to do things the right way.”

Ortiz said he wouldn't want "any other player to go through" what he had since The New York Times broke news that Ortiz's name had made a 100-person list of players who tested positive for doping in 2003.
