Baylor Scandal Has Football Recruits Looking Elsewhere

The firing of Baylor head football coach Art Briles has some high school recruits reconsidering going to Baylor.

Chevin Calloway, a junior defensive back at Bishop Dunne Catholic School, has a blue storage bin overflowing with recruitment letters from college football programs across the country.

"Texas, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Notre Dame," he says, casually flipping each piece of mail back into the bin.

There's a few pieces of mail from Baylor University, which had been at the top of Chevin's list of potential destinations, until news broke Thursday that Briles would be fired following the investigation of alleged sexual assaults involving several Baylor football players.

"I look at (Baylor) a little differently. I do have to re-evaluate it because, again, I'm so used to seeing what Coach Briles did with the program," Calloway said. "They're not completely off the list, they're just not as high as they were. I'll definitely be looking to see how everything turns out."

Calloway has been in Waco for several visits and has spoken directly to Briles. His parents said the ongoing scandal emphasizes that Chevin's choice is not solely about football. It's about the culture of the entire university.

"You want what's best for him and at the end of the day it's his decision. But at the same time you want that coaching staff to be the family and parent away from home," said Bradford Davis, Chevin's step-father. "You don't want him to be around guys, around the type of environment, where this is OK behavior."
