The Obama administration is close to deciding where the U.S. will house detainees from the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a White House official said late Saturday.

Obama, who pledged to close the facility by January but admitted Friday the deadline may not be met, is working with his administration to decide where to relocate the inmates set to be moved from Gitmo once the prison is closed, the official said.

"We are in the final stages of locating a security facility in the U.S. where detainees can be held," the official said.

There are still 223 detainees at Guantanamo Bay, which opened after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
