Wounded Game Warden Avoided Felony Illegal Hunting Charges

A Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden who was illegally hunting when he was shot in 2013 was allowed to keep his job and face only a fine rather than felony charges.

The Austin American Statesman reported that off-duty Game Warden Chris Friend was bow hunting without a permit when he was shot in December 2013.

Friend had also hunted without permits at least three times during the 2013-2014 license year.

Instead of facing felony charges or dismissal upon his shooting, though, Friend got an $800 ticket.

That's because a Parks and Wildlife Department-led investigation found that Friend transitioned "into a game warden law enforcement mode" just before he was shot.

Two men from Illinois have since been charged in Friend's shooting. They say it was an accident.
