Texas Rangers Say No Evidence of Crime by Mortuary

Texas Rangers have cited lack of evidence in not pursuing a criminal case over multiple unidentified immigrants buried in single graves.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported Tuesday that Lt. Corey Lain says the practices of Funeraria Del Angel Howard-Williams did not violate Texas law. Lain's report was made public after a grand jury declined to indict anyone.

Brooks County commissioners on June 25 approved a preliminary inquiry into immigrant burials at Sacred Heart Burial Park in Falfurrias. Some remains were in trash bags and shopping bags.

Lain interviewed forensic anthropologists and funeral home representatives, who cooperated. He says the mortuary did not overcharge the county for immigrant burials. The Texas Funeral Services Commission found no violations.

Funeral home officials say they advised county officials about limited cemetery space.
