Texas Medical Board Orders Probation for Cancer Doctor

The Texas Medical Board has placed a Houston doctor who says he's found a cure for cancer on probation for five years.

The Austin American Statesman reports that Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski was also ordered Friday to pay $60,000 in fines and restitution -- but those punishments were more lenient than what had been recommended.

The board had accused Burzynski since 2014 of a host of charges, including misleading terminally ill patients. The decision means he'll pay $40,000 in fines and $20,000 in restitution to a former patient, in addition to getting probation.

Some former patients demonstrated in Austin on Burzynski's behalf. The doctor's attorney, Dan Cogdell, also noted that many of the 400-plus complaints the medical board filed against Burzynski were dismissed by the State Office of Administrative Hearings.
