Scheme Afoot to Discredit Officials, DA Watkins Says

Special Prosecutor Ted Lyon will investigate several allegations of corruption within Dallas County at the request of Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins.

Watkins' First Assistant, Terri Moore, held a news conference Wednesday morning.

Moore said a witness inside the Dallas County Commissioners' investigation into constable corruption brought information forward alleging a scheme to discredit public officials.

Those officials include the District Attorney and his family. The witness sent a letter detailing a scheme to discredit the officials by lying to investigators.

Moore went on to read a statement written by Watkins saying Special Prosecutor Lyon will investigate "serious allegations about an outrageous scheme sought to personally harm Dallas County officials as well as myself and my family in connection with investigating Dallas County constables."

After much questioning, Moore also acknowledged it is an election season and that the allegations could be politically charged.

Lyon is former police officer and past member of the Texas House of Representatives and Texas Senate.
