SMU Reports Off-Campus Sexual Assault

University Park police investigating assault

Southern Methodist University said Wednesday that a female student reported that a male student sexually assaulted her early Friday morning.

The victim told University Park police on Tuesday that a male acquaintance assaulted her at an apartment in the 3400 block of Asbury Avenue.

University Park police are investigating. No arrests have been made.

SMU sent a crime alert to its students Wednesday night about the assault.

The university has reported four other sexual assaults this year. Two SMU students were arrested in September in separate cases.

In 2011, SMU reported a total of two cases and one case in 2010.

SMU has been criticized in the past for the way it reports sexual assaults to city and county authorities. Last week, the university announced the formation of a special task force to review its sexual misconduct policies and procedures.
