As temperatures flirt with 100 degrees outside for days, the heat is rising for some people in East Dallas apartments who say they've complained to management about broken air conditioning units.
John Larkin, a resident at the Paree of Upper E Apartments on Gaston Avenue, said the two-pipe chill system that cools down the building's 20 or so apartment units broke down on July 3 and that management claimed it's waiting on a part to fix it.
In the meantime, Larkin said management supplied residents with a window a/c unit that is doing little to cool down apartments.
An infrared thermometer inside Larkin's apartment bedroom at about 8 p.m. Tuesday got a reading of 101 degrees.
“It’s like being in a sauna. That’s the best way to describe it. You’re standing in a sauna and this is where you’re supposed to live. They just need to fix the air conditioner,” said Larkin.
He sleeps on a cot alongside two fans in his living room, the only room with a window which was equipped with a cooling unit, he said, 10 days ago.
“They say, ‘Well, we're waiting on a part.’ How long do we have to wait for a part? Friday will be three weeks without any air conditioning,” said Larkin.

He said Dallas code enforcement has cited apartment management over the issue.
NBC 5 contacted the property management group who referred us to its corporate offices, and we were unable to reach a representative with the company Tuesday night.
“This whole community is full of people. You've got all these people who live here with all these kids, lots of kids, and it's miserable,” said Larkin.
