Resident Shot Twice in Own Back Yard

Search under way for missing weapon

Fort Worth police have taken a 21-year-old man into custody after a resident was shot during a burglary attempt.

According to police, the shooting took place at about 9 a.m. on the 5800-block of Jennie when 57-year-old Ruben Rangel interrupted a burglary at his south Fort Worth home.

Police spokesperson Sharron Neal said Rangel arrived at home to find a burglar inside. Rangel confronted the burglar who shot up to five times, hitting Rangel once in each hip.

Rangel's sons told NBC 5 he is expected to be OK.

A neighbor spotted the gunman running from the scene and crossing nearby railroad tracks before going yard to yard.  Fort Worth police were able to track the man down and arrest him without further incident.  The gunman's identity has not yet been revealed.

Officers did not find a weapon on the man taken into custody. A search is under way for the missing gun.

NBC 5's Ray Villeda and Keaton Fox contributed to this report.
