Rabid Skunk Found in Frisco Backyard

Skunk killed by dogs in family's backyard tests positive for rabies

Frisco pet owners are going on the defensive after a skunk found in the city limits tested positive for rabies.

According to a city press release, a homeowner living north of Panther Creek Parkway and Farm-to-Market 423 discovered in late September that his dogs had killed a skunk in the family's backyard.

The skunk was sent to Austin, where State Health Services confirmed it was carrying rabies.

The dogs have been placed into precautionary quarantine at home. But because they are up to date on their rabies vaccinations and booster shots, they are not showing symptoms.

"It's a little bit scary to think it's this close to home," Joyce Raburn said. "If one skunk has rabies, there must be many more that weren't caught."

But state data shows the area is not dealing with an unusually high volume of cases.

In the meantime, the city of Frisco is encouraging residents to get dogs and cats vaccinated. One of Raburn's pets is due for an update this month, and she said she will not up it put off.

"I would say this is a major push," she said. "I'll be vigilant in making sure she gets her rabies [shot]."

Rabies vaccinations are required for pets by city ordinance.
