Playoff Game Postpones 44-Year DeSoto Tradition

When the DeSoto High School Eagles take the field Saturday to face rivals Cedar Hill, the stands will be packed with fans. That's because the city of DeSoto has postponed its annual Hometown Holiday Parade, which was scheduled to start 30 minutes before kickoff.

"We suspected where most people would be, at AT&T Stadium," said DeSoto Mayor Curtistene Smith McCowan. "We're very much a part of that team, and we want to be there for them."

McCowan said the decision was made shortly after the team advanced in the playoffs last weekend. She is adamant that the parade will be rescheduled.

"There will be a parade and, boy, it's going to be something special," she said.

The mayor envisions a parade later in the month celebrating the holidays and, perhaps, DeSoto's first state championship in football. She said she has yet to hear any complaints about the decision. It certainly won't come from the football field.

"We were hoping there was some overlap because that meant we were still playing football," said DeSoto head coach Todd Peterman. "When we found out they were going to (postpone) it we were obviously excited and appreciate the support."

"I expect a very large crowd and we're looking forward to kicking the door in," Peterman said.

The DeSoto vs. Cedar Hill game begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
