Off-Duty Officer Shoots Man at Taco Bell

Off-duty officer tries to talk to suspect holding marijuana

A Dallas police officer shot and killed an armed man at a fast food restaurant Sunday morning.

The shooting took place at about 10:15 a.m. at the Taco Bell on the 4300-block of West Camp Wisdom Road.

Sr. Corporal Melinda Gutierrez said the officer, whose name has not been released, was off-duty at the time but in full uniform. While in line to order food, the officer saw an 18-year-old man, later identified as Kendrick McDaniel, with a marijuana cigarette.

The officer tried to talk to McDaniel who, according to police, reached for his handgun.

Gutierrez said the officer then shot McDaniel, who was taken to a hospital where he later died.

McDaniel's handgun was recovered at the scene. The officer was not hurt.

The Dallas Police Department Special Investigations Unit is looking into the incident. The officer is a 10-year veteran of the department.

Late Sunday, police said the suspect will be charged with Possession of Marijuana, Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon and Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant.

Dallas police will update the public at a media briefing Monday at 10 a.m.
