OSU Student From Flower Mound Killed During Spring Break

An Oklahoma State University student from Flower Mound died after she was struck by a suspected drunk driver during spring break.

Kasey Waychoff, 19, was walking with friends along a beach road in Gulf Shores, Ala., when she was hit and killed.

Taxi driver Dave Tillman was on duty at 2 a.m. and says he picked up some spring breakers who witnessed the accident.

"The guy that hit her, the eye witness said he was driving all over the road. I couldn't believe that, because there was hundreds of kids all down the sides of that highway on the west end," said Tillman. "They say he was running like 50-55 miles per hour, and it's 35 down through there."

Justin Ellis Lott, 29, from Montgomery, was arrested on driving under the influence charges, and police said more charges could be pending.

"The vehicle actually continued traveling after the accident and the sheriff's office made a traffic stop," said Gulf Shores police officer Josh Coleman.

Waychoff graduated from Flower Mound High School in 2012 and was a sophomore at OSU.

The Lewisville-Flower Mound ISD told NBC 5 there are a lot of heavy hearts at Flower Mound HS.

Waychoff was described as a leader. She helped mentor other seniors during her senior year, students who were struggling in school. She also was part of an extracurricular group, leading cheers from the stands at athletic games.

“She just had an ease about her. That was probably the thing that was most evident,” said the teen's uncle, Jeff Waychoff, who also lives in DFW.

Jeff Waychoff said Kasey was closest to her older brother, Wesley, who also attended OSU.

“That’s probably the one thing, if you were thinking about Kasey, you had to think about Wesley because they were always together. They traveled around the world together, spent tremendous amounts of time together. They we to Oklahoma State together. They were just really close brother and sister.”

Jeff Waychoff said his family is devastated by what happened, but for the time being is focused on remember Kasey and not on the person who killed her.

“We’re going to love each other and take care of each other first. And we’re not going to deal with the other stuff until later. So right now it’s all about Kasey and it’s all about family.”

Neighbors in her Flower Mound neighborhood have turned out to lend their support to the Waychoff family.

"This is something that’s not supposed to happen. She had her whole life ahead of her, family, all kind of good things coming her way, and I'm telling you, she was the sweetest thing you can imagine," said neighbor Mike Keeling. "Like I said, we're just going to miss her."

Neighbors said she had just gotten accepted to study in Shanghai, China next spring.

Waychoff was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority at OSU and served as the Beta Psi chapter's financial vice president.

"The entire Gamma Phi Beta family mourns the tragic loss of Kasey. She was a sister, friend and cherished member who will be genuinely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kasey's family and the women of Beta Psi Chapter," said International President Krista Davis.

Details of funeral services for Waychoff have not yet been announced.
