Many Fort Worth city employees are off today -- but not because it's Columbus Day.

Monday is the city's first mandatory furlough day.  City Hall, municipal courts and most city buildings will be closed Monday help cut into an estimated $59 million budget shortfall.

The furloughs were announced in early August.  The city of Dallas has a similar plan in place to save money.

Emergency services and trash service will continue to operate as usual.
