Late Funding Delays Textbooks for Schools

The first week of school is almost over and some students are still waiting on new textbooks, forcing schools to find ways to teach without them.

School districts across the state have had to wait longer than usual to order books because the state legislature didn't approve school funding until well into the summer.

Districts typically order textbooks in April but weren't able to place this year's order until just a few weeks ago, the Star-Telegram reports.

According to the paper, publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has seen only 25 percent of the anticipated orders come in so far and that the Texas Education Agency has 80 book requisitions from districts around the state still waiting on approval.
