Irving SWAT Officer Injured at Gun Range

Irving police say a SWAT officer was injured by a ricochet at the firing range Tuesday morning.

Officials with the department said officer Graham Smith "was standing alongside another officer who was firing a handgun when fragments from a discharged round ricocheted and struck the officer in the hand, then traveled up his arm."

The target was about 15 feet away from where the officers were shooting.

Other officers located nearby provided first aid before Smith was taken to the hospital. Smith's injury is not considered life threatening and he is expected to be sent home sometime Tuesday.

Smith, a member of the Irving Police Department's SWAT team, has been with the department since 1990.
