Hundreds of Harvey Evacuees Arrive in Dallas

Hundreds of Hurricane Harvey evacuees are arriving in Dallas from the Texas coast.

Two evacuee shelters are open Dallas.

One at the Walnut Hill Recreation Center is at capacity with 300 people.

The other at the Tommy Allen Recreation Center is filling up. It was housing 50 people as of Saturday afternoon.

“I wanted to go ahead and leave I think people aren't taking it as seriously as it should be taken,” said Roshell Walker.

Walker, her children, brother and cousin arrived at the Tommy Allen Recreation Center from Tomball on Saturday afternoon.

She says her mother and step-father decided to stay in Houston.

“I’m going to keep in touch with her and hope that if something does happen then she's able to be rescued,” she said with tears in her eyes.

Anxious evacuees also arrived at the Walnut Hill Recreation Center in North Dallas, many with pets in tow.

For health and safety reasons, the animals will stay at the SPCA until the evacuees can return home.

The city of Dallas and The American Red Cross say they will open even more shelters if necessary.

They say they’re prepared to accommodate up to 6,000 people.
