Houston-Area Police Shooting Prompts Demonstration

A police shooting that left a man dead prompted a demonstration outside a Houston-area police station where arguments among protesters became heated.

The confrontation Sunday in Texas City at times turned physical. One group had gathered to protest the shooting of Carlton Smith outside a nightclub Friday. An opposing group turned out expressing support for police.

Demonstrators supporting the family of Smith, a 20-year-old black man, issued demands that include the release of police video of the shooting.

A preliminary autopsy shows Smith was shot five times. Police said officer Christopher Ham had ordered Smith to drop his handgun. Authorities contend Smith had fired into a crowd outside the club.

Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset told The Galveston County Daily News that police continue to interview witnesses to the shooting.
