Guns For Groceries Returns

The city of Dallas is hoping the allure of food will help make the city safer as it offers groceries in return for guns.

The Gun Buy Back & Gun Safety event aims to collect as many guns as possible from neighborhood streets. City officials gained nearly 150 firearms with the first buyback event held on Feb. 28.

Each working, unloaded weapon will be exchanged for a $50 grocery card.

Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway and Dallas Police Lt. Andy Harvey spoke about the plan Tuesday at Dallas City Hall.

"We need to work with other cities and be proactive to increase safety in our communities," Caraway said.

The event is scheduled for Aug. 15 at Dallas City Hall. Participants will be required to show a form of ID.
