Federal prosecutors in Sherman say almost 30 people have been arrested on charges of smuggling undocumented immigrants into Texas.

Authorities also seized $40,000 to $50,000, firearms and 13 vehicles during the Wednesday raid.

The 27 defendants are accused of transporting 500 to 1,000 undocumented workers per month into the United States, charging immigrants $1,500 to $2,500 each. The accused range in age from 22 to 51, with several living in Dallas suburbs.

A grand jury indicted them April 8. If convicted, defendants face 10 to 20 years in federal prison, prosecutors said Friday.
