Episcopal School of Dallas Students Receive High Honor for Service

Imagine spending 100 hours a year giving back to your community. That's exactly what a group of high school students in Dallas did in 2015 and Wednesday they were recognized with the President's Volunteer Service Award.

Many of them delivered meals to the hungry, built houses, visited sick children or took mission trips.

Three-hundred high school students at the Episcopal School of Dallas stood up and gave the gift of service.

In the freshman class, 80 students reached a goal of 50 community service hours. Crossing the 100-hour mark were 71 sophomores, 82 juniors and 67 seniors. The student body at ESD volunteered at more than 80 different nonprofit organizations in the North Texas community, including Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, AIDS Arms, Project Transformation, Wesley Rankin Center, the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, VNA Meals on Wheels, the North Texas Food Bank and Students Shoulder to Shoulder.

NBC 5's Meredith Land was honored to speak to the students about the importance of volunteerism and to shake their hands as they picked up their awards.
