Donors Raise Cash to Replace Broken Air Conditioners

Military photos decorate the home of 93-year-old Russell McDaniel, a World War II veteran. His home became unusually warm this week, thanks to a broken air conditioning unit.

"This time, the weather, there's nothing to take place of an air conditioner," McDaniel said.

A similar story came to the attention of an NBC DFW viewer, Nikki Green, who stepped in to help. Green took to social media and within 48 hours, a Go Fund Me page racked up more than $1,000.

It's enough to buy 12 window A/C units.

In the process of purchasing those units, Green received a call that brought her to tears– an anonymous donor's wish to double the amount.

"I didn't expect this," Green said. "I just said I'll buy a couple units because I know it is hot."

Altogether, Green raised enough cash to buy 30 A/C units with Jerry Dibling stepping in to install them for free.

"It does give you a great feeling to help some people out that unfortunately can't help themselves," Green said.

McDaniel said he is used to Texas summers, but he is certainly glad he won't have to feel the heat indoors.

"I was so blessed, so happy I wanted to hug both those guys. I wanted to hug those guys that come put in that air conditioner," McDaniel said.
