The shooting was reported before 5 p.m. in the 3000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Police say officers were in the area searching for the suspect – later identified as 18-year-old Tradareon Choice – on an aggravated robbery warrant from a recent carjacking. The man began running from the DPD officers, but after noticing Dallas ISD police officers across the street he turned and ran back in the direction of the DPD officers. Choice then pulled a handgun from the waist band of his pants, police said.

Officer Zachery Helm shot Choice once in the leg, and the man was taken to a hospital, where he is expected to be OK.

None of the officers were injured.

Details on the charges Choice faces have not been released.

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting.
