The teen, identified by the district as 15-year-old sophomore Trenten Darton, was taken from Aledo High School to Cook Children's Medical Center Monday morning.

His cause of death is not yet known. District Superintendent Dr. Derek Citty is only saying that he had a medical issue.

Trenten played on the school basketball team and he collapsed around 9:00 AM Monday, during an athletic period the different teams share before their first class. Dr. Citty said he wasn't playing basketball at the time.

A school nurse and athletic trainer immediately started trying to resuscitate him and emergency responders arrived quickly.

But, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office, Trenten died at the hospital at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday.

There are counselors on hand at Aledo High School helping students and staff cope.

But the superintendent says their top priority is to support Trenten's family.

"Our heart goes out to them at such a tragic time," said Dr. Citty. "It kind of speaks to how your life can change overnight. Our community is known for rallying around folks in need and I suspect our community will do that. Not only in the school district, but the community will rally around this family and lift them up in the coming weeks and months and years."

There will be a vigil for Trenten at 7:00 Tuesday night at the Church of the Crossing in Aledo.

This is not the first tragedy Trenten's classmates have had to deal with. Last November, another student in their grade, Zeb Montgomery, died of cancer.

Before that, in June 2015, former Aledo ISD Superintendent Don Daniel and his grandson, 14-year-old Hunter Corzine, were killed in a car accident.
