Crowley police say a man killed his wife, then tried to commit suicide leaving his 2-year-old son to fend for himself in the dark along some rural railroad tracks. The toddler survived the ordeal.
It started at 10:19 p.m. Thursday when Crowley police said they received a call of a noise disturbance in the 100 block of Hirth Street. Officers found Ashley Jean Dewater, 22, dead inside the home from seven bullet wounds.
Crowley police said Corey Daniel Dewater, 24, confessed to his father about killing his wife and said, "I'm going to die tonight. I'm either going to kill myself, or the police are going to kill me."
At 11:15 p.m. Thursday, Johnson County deputies got a call of an accident in Egan at the railroad tracks near FM 2280 and FM 917. Deputies found Dewater's vehicle abandoned, but because the engine was still warm and the rear tires were still smoking deputies concluded the Dewater must still be in the area and on foot, Johnson County sheriff Bob Alford told the Crowley Star.
Crowley police said with the help of Fort Worth K-9 units, Dewater was found a half-mile away near the railroad tracks with his 2-year-old son sitting on his chest. The boy was released to family members.
Crowley police said Dewater was wearing an armored vest when he was found and had an AK-47 assault rifle loaded with 77 rounds of ammo as well as a fully-loaded Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol tucked in his waistband.
Dewater was unconscious and unresponsive according to Crowley police. Dewater was taken to Huguley Memorial Medical Center, then transferred to Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth where he remained in a coma until he was taken off life support on Monday.
